Nutella

Did you know that Nutella was invented in Piedmont? In the past the typical “merenda” (afternoon snack) was bread with chocolate on top, however, kids tended to eat the chocolate bar and waste the bread. Pietro Ferrero, the founding father of the famous Italian company based in Alba, wanted to find a solution to this problem. So, in 1946 he invented a cream primarily made out of chocolate and hazelnuts that people could spread on bread. He called it “Giandujot”, name taken from the typical Piedmontese chocolate. Over the years the recipe was developed to become the one we know today and in 1963 the name was changed into “Nutella” (from the English word “nut”); this product soon became globally famous.
